Geographic Range: N. Mexico and N. California to Alaska and across ot Great Lakes. Newfoundland and Appalachians; isolated populations in Florida (currently aobut 1,250)

Status: Common in Minnesota 2001 Census- 31,000

Length: Approximately 5 feet

Weight: 250-550 pounds, males are generally 20% larger

Appearance: Black, cinnamon, white

Habitat: Forests and woodlands

Typical Diet: Omnivorous. Plant matter, insects. They kill approximately 40,000 white-tailed deer per year in Minnesota. Each bear may kill 1-3 annually. Bears have longer digestive tracts to process large amounts of hard-to-digest plant matter. Bears crush and grind their food, rather than tear and shred it like wolves.

Similar Species: Brown, or grizzly bear. There are six other species of bear in the world today. The Asiatic black bear, sloth bear, South American spectacled bear, sun bear, polar bear, giant panda bear. Of the 8 species, only the polar bear has a diet made up mostly of meat.
